S.L.A.I. - Steel Lancer Arena International
Giant mechanoid-, robot-, and Manga-fans listen up. It is 2071AD and the formerly dangerous battle sport now places contestants in a safe connected virtual realm from which to operate the destructive competitions ran by F.I.R.A. (Federation of International Rumbling Associations). These explosive rumbles take place across the globe from New York, Las Vegas and London, to Tokyo, Kairo and Stuttgard. Wire-Heads access the Hyper Advanced Virtual Environmental Network (H.A.V.E.N) to challenge other players whose SV's (Scoot Vehicles) pack some serious firepower. Some of the SV's are classic Robotech and Manga style limbed machines while others are shamelessly ripped from RoboCop's ED209. In stead of VS or Quick Battle modes, you should dive into the Story Mode where you'll need to get your SV license at Battle School, getting to know all of the workings, movements and weaponry before you can enter rumble tournaments. As you score money and rise amoung the ranks, you can upgrade your machine. At the SV Hangar you can modify, The Mechanist allows you to trade used modules, Difference-EG supplies new and upgraded chips, Idol Shops sell new persona-ware, Data Mnemonic stores memories and Blood Music supplies you with a wide choice of tunes (from rock and techno to blues flavoured tracks). Kojima, Omsk, Ventuno, Ma.Fabrik and American Stars supply a range of ultra light to ultra heavy SV's. The gameplay feels a little stilted at first, and if you're not a fan of this kind of game, it is unlikely to change along the way.
