SUIKODEN IV
What starts out seeming like a swashbuckling adventure with fantasy elements becomes a tedious turn-based adventure of laborious gameplay and very little player involvement (except going through the motions and making decisions). The higher resolution cut-scenes turn into static lower-grade battles: they include a chessboard-like grid for ship battles as well as hand to hand combat with the usual choices of attack, defend or medical potions for injuries. The loading times are long and leaves you with a pitch black screen, thinking your disc has frozen up. The strategic battles are boring (but I guess if we could enjoy the manual Battleships in the pre-video game '70s, this one can be tolerated, but by today's standards, go high tech or retro, not halfway in between). The blend of olden day technology and style with a fantasy slant also expands into human-animal hybrids like cat- & dolphin-like people. As the ship's captain you make strategic decision to sink enemy ships and can also do co-operative close quarters combat and select your underlings to assist. The ship contains Rune cannons (fire, lightning, water, wind, earth) and you can select your crew according to Rune compatibility. Some players prefer actual playing than mere choice selection.
