THE WARRIORS
In 1979 Walter Hill's controversial New York street gang movie had many people talking. In fact I believe initially it was banned here in South Africa for a stretch. While some people may find it a little dated today, it has a gritty '70s edge movies lack today, and it remains a cool flick, referenced by everyone from Twisted Sister (on their Come Out And Play album) to Eminem and D12 (for a music video featuring Ice-T). The basic storyline opens with gang prophet Cyrus calling all the rival New York gangs together in Central Park to create a truce and a union, as they outnumber the cops. Together they can take over the city. But, the leader of the Psychos shoots Cyrus, laying the blame at the Warriors' feet. Their survival run begins as they try to get back to their Coney Island turf, every single gang on their tail. In this testosterone driven (and rather violent) game, most of the prominent gangs can be accessed like the title characters, as well as the Baseball Furies, Orphans, Turnbull ACS, and Psychos. Many of the original actors' faces were replicated. You can take on a Quick Rumble as individual or with your whole gang in a War Party, vs. a second player or against the CPU. The more extended story chapter allows you to take the role of a new Warriors gang member three months before the Cyrus incident, having to prove your guts and mettle to see if you're tough enough to join. That super-cool '70s music and jive-ass lingo is an integral part - the synthesizer soundtrack also taking you back and encapsulating the ominous mood the dark street scenes evoked (only the final scene playing out at sunrise). The violence and language limits the game to players over 18.
