An ex-military sniper is arrested for the random shooting of five people. Before he is beaten unconscious in jail, he asks for Jack Reacher. Jack is a former military investigator who flies under the radar, and can only be tracked down if he wants to be. He has a history with the man and is set to take him down. But what seems like a clean cut case is soon uncovered by Reacher to hold far more than its face value. He analyses everything to the limit, from physical evidence to small interactions and gestures leading him to conclude various outcomes that propel towards the truth. And when violence or deadly force is required, he obliges without flinching. Working with the female lawyer assigned the accused man's case, the local police is also none to pleased with his presence and the resulting broken bodies.
With layers of conspiracy and surprises unfolding, and some exhilarating action and chases, imminent danger is always around the corner.
A pleasant surprise has German director Werner Hertzog starring as one of the villains.
There has been a few complaints that the tall character of writer Jim Grant aka Lee Child's Jack Reacher is laughable in the small stature of Cruise, but with good acting, cinematography, fight choreography and editing, it doesn't matter, as the scenes are extremely effective (at times even deliberately comical).
