BORAT
Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan

With Sacha Baron Cohen, Daniel Castro
Directed by Larry Charles

The man who made comedy waves with his Ali G character, Sasch Baron Cohen, is no one trick pony. Another of his creations is Borat, a TV reporter from Kazakhstan whose inserts on American culture in Da Ali G Show has burst from the telly onto the big screen, eclipsing his original character. Besides the bad taste humour, embarrassing situations and culture clashing comedy, Cohen is a brilliant impersonator, truly giving the character life. In this escapade Borat is sent to the USA by the Kazakhstan ministry of culture to go learn about American culture to enrich their nation with these explorations and discoveries. Accompanied by his cameraman and producer they fall into this big new world, totally consuming our fish out of water Borat. The narrative of this woeful tale is peppered with some classic real situation rip-offs as in the TV show (from etiquette lessons, a dinner party, and humour coaching to driving lessons and cowboys). When Borat sees Pamela Anderson for the first time on Baywatch, he’s smitten, and high-jacks the documentary shoot by diverting them to California so he can meet and marry her. Apparently villagers of the Romanian town they shot in for the Kazakhstan opening of the movie is suing the producers for depicting them in a bad light. There are some hectic Jewish bits as well, but I haven’t heard of any law suits just yet (probably since Cohen is Jewish himself). This is a riot with some wacky, hectic, extreme and always hilarious scenes. You either love this type of crazy, uncomfortable humour or you hate it. Cohen is either a comedy genius or a total irresponsible bastard. Now, all we’re waiting for is the big screen debut of his gay fashion reporter character Bruno!
