With Jason Statham, Michael Angarano, Milo Ventimiglia, Sofia Vergara, Anne Heche, Hope davis, Stanley Tucci, Jason Alexander
Written by William Goldman (based on his novel Heat)
Directed by Simon West
Based on famed screenwriter William Goldman's book Heat (also made into a film with Burt Reynolds in 1986), Statham is an almost obvious choice in the role of ass-kicker Nick Wild, an unconventional freelance Vegas bodyguard (with a gambling habit). When an escort friend petitions Nick to take care of a connected brat who abused her, he ignores the fact that it's the son of a dangerous criminal and a violent confrontation results in the man paying her off. She gives Nick half the cash.
He decides to gamble and hit a big number so he can leave Vegas - but after winning half a million, he feels he needs more so he can leave for good (very much in the vein of the aspirations in movies like Carlito's Way, or any "one last score" scenario. But, it works well). With the mob on his tail, it is not going to be an easy getaway.
The suspense and drama is punctuated with at least three highly stylized and adrenaline-pumping fight scenes (in a hotel room, casino floor and diner). With a dry sense of humour, Wild Card is an exciting movie (even though it did not perform at the box office).
Director Simon West is known for action movies like Con Air, Expendables 2 and an(other) upcoming remake of The Blob.
