PETER FRAMPTON
The other day on the radio I heard a live version of Peter Frampton doing
his Baby, I Love Your Way. For years I was completely aware of
the Frampton phenomenon, but not as completely clued up to his rock significance
as I ought to have been. I mean, everyone (should) recognize the album
cover of his Frampton Comes Alive!, like Rodriguez
Cold Fact a staple addition to many of our older brothers & sisters
LP collections of the 70s. But like many of the younger siblings, I had
heard very few of the songs from this biggest selling live album, or at
least never took much notice (being involved with important stuff like
Spiderman
and Kiss.
My selective ignorance became clear when this song on the radio conjured
up Will To Power,
the Pop-Reggae band who'd done a cover version in the early 90s - which
I thought was in fact the original! The shame! But, this actually substantiated
Frampton's timeless essence, this song seeming like a recent hit, its
live recording sounding like it was done the other day! This compilation
contains a whopping 18 tunes, including the likes of the unforgettable
Show Me The Way, All Night Long and Do You Feel Like We Do.
Four of the tracks are live recordings. Peter Frampton was not merely
a good looking, long haired poster boy for rock music in the 70s, but
also contributed greatly to the shaping of this ever-progressing genre.
He was also recently involved in the 70s rock movie Almost
Famous by ex-music
journalist Cameron Crowe. The now film director also wrote the Comes
Alive! sleeve notes while still in journalist capacity during the
70s. Seeming like a signature American Rock artist, Frampton is in fact
and Englishman and had been a once member of the popular Humple
Pie. The extremely
accessible rock songs of Peter Frampton has become part of many people's
lives and with this great collection will no doubt garner more and play
a rebirthing role for those whose vinyls had become unplayable.
