PESTROY - Skam

Pestroy are a 5-piece South African outfit delivering what can only be described as recycled, repackaged American-styled angst rock. But Skam isn't all that bad, all things considered. On merit alone this album works just fine and satisfactorily showcases the band's talent in- and commitment to- pulling off their own take on the sound and aggression that has influenced them. There's a well executed fusion of a lot of the metal/punk/hip-hop hype that seems to be doing the rounds these days on this album... but the unnatural American accent prevalent in the vocals can be a tad off-putting... Production is a little tinny and doesn't do justice to the fact that there are three guitars in this band... most of the time, I could only hear one. A fuller, fatter, more multi-dimensional sound would naturally be expected from an 18-string onslaught, but sadly doesn't seem to manifest itself. Still, I like the packaging and the genuine stab Pestroy have taken at emulating a sound that seems to have taken the whole world by storm...
