ROLLING STONES - Forty Licks
Around the same time as the release of the King Of Rock & Roll's
number one hits album, the dirtier Princes of the genre get a double album
with 40 slices of R&R history from the '60s to present day. Unlike the
Elvis disc, the Stones' tracks are not chronologically listed,
the release timeline not of importance but rather how they flow. You don't
need to be gray around the temples to know some of their 1960s gems like
(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction, Gimme Shelter, Jumpin' Jack Flash, Ruby
Tuesday, Sympathy For The Devil, Under My Thumb, Let's Spend The Night
Together or Get Off My Cloud. This era takes up most of the
first disc, Wild Horses being the only odd one out from 1971. The
second disc covers the 70s onwards, up until 4 brand new 2002 offerings.
Here you'll find equally classic tunes like Start Me Up, Brown Sugar,
Angie, Undercover Of The Night, Emotional Rescue, It's Only Rock 'n' Roll
and Anybody Seen My Baby (co-written by k.d. lang). These
Mick Jagger / Keith Richards compositions not only helped
define the rougher side of Rock & Roll during the clean-cut Beatles
era, but managed to stand the test of time by still being phenomenal musical
feats without being over technical, complex or intellectual - And they're
still performing them live on sold out world tours. This one's also more
than a slice of history and a definite keeper.
