ANKE
–
Tribute
To The
Great
Female
Vocalists
2003
South
African
Idols
TV talent
show
winner
Anke
Pietrangeli
never
really
made
much
of an
impression
- that
superstar
quality
just
never
bursting
out.
With
this
collection
of well
known
songs
it seems
as though
Anke
is trying
to prove
critics
like
me wrong
by taking
on some
of the
best
known
songs
by some
of the
world’s
biggest
female
superstars
across
the
decades,
from
the
‘60s
up until
the
2000s.
While
I feel
it is
a hit
and
miss
affair
(with
some
songs
being
enormous,
legendary
and
timeless,
synonymous
with
the
artist
making
them
famous).
But,
you
will
have
to be
the
judge
whether
she
does
them
justice
or not.
They
include:
Donna
Summer
(MacArthur
Park),
Madonna
(Hung
Up),
Alannah
Myles
(Black
Velvet),
Sheena
Easton
(Morning
Train
/ Nine
To Five),
Cilla
Black
(You’re
My World),
Tina
Turner
(The
Best),
Cher
(Believe),
Kim
Carnes
(Bette
Davis
Eyes),
Petula
Clark
(Downtown),
Dolly
Parton
/ Whitney
Huston
(I Will
Always
Love
You),
Irene
Cara
(Flashdance
What
A Feeling),
Bonnie
Tyler
(Total
Eclipse
Of The
Heart
–
with
another
Idols
winner
Heinz
Winckler),
Debbie
Harry
/ Blondie
(Call
Me),
Bette
Midler
(The
Rose),
Laura
Brannigan
(Self
Control),
Roxette
(It
Must’ve
Been
Love),
Kylie
Minogue
(In
Your
Eyes),
Jennifer
Rush
(Power
Of Love),
Cyndi
Lauper
(Girls
Just
Wanna
Have
Fun),
Karen
Carpenter
(Goodbye
To Love).
My argument
is often
–
why
listen
to someone
else’s
inferior
or deliberately
adapted
version
of a
well
known
and
-loved
song,
when
you
can
still
listen
to the
original…?
