BEST OF SA COUNTRY Vol.4 – Various

Country music (like Black Metal) is an acquired taste. When it is done outside of the USA, things can get a little shaky when this cowboy culture is adopted and adapted in another milieu, like Japan for instance – it just doesn’t have that same authenticity. For the most part it boils down to people loving this brand of music, and then wanting to play that particular style (as with the Black Metal example, kids from Mexico donning corpse paint and singing about Nordic gods and Satan just doesn’t seem the same as done by someone from Scandinavia…).
Country music has a big following in South Africa, and thus also spawned many a country singer. This double disc of (sometimes cheap and nasty) S.A. renditions of the country style include some stalwarts like Barbara Ray, Bobby Angel, Lance James, Tommy Dell, Clive Bruce, Gene Rockwell, and Billy Forrest. And of course shameless opportunists like The Campbells, Juanita du Plessis, and all rounders like Steve Hofmeyr. Cheesy crooners like Ken Mullan and the late Bles Bridges also took a shot at the genre. Others include Cobus Snyman, Joanna Field, Ray Dylan, Lee Magnum, Rockin’ Horse etc. With 40 tracks in all, if this is your flavour, who the hell am I to tell you it sucks?
