COVER 2 COVER Vol. 4 - Various
Purists who try to wish away the scourge of bad cover versions will have
to face facts, however hard. It won't dissipate - especially in the light
of diminishing originality in the music industry. Not all covers are abominations
though, some artists making good choices and giving it their character
as opposed to a mere attempt at duplication or slapping a dance beat over
it - what's the point in that? This collection is one of the more frivolous
dance/pop takes on great (and less so) tunes of the past. To some (like
me) the song titles are far more recognizable than the groups covering
them. Starsplash, Global Deejays, DJ Sputnik, Crowdshaker, Refresh
Crew, Mike MH4, Mysterio, Vandalism and Red Garden give modern
digitally produced club takes on songs from Bon Jovi's Livin'
On A Prayer and Sade's No Ordinary Love to Duran
Duran's 007 theme (A View To A Kill), Toto's Africa
and Phil Collins' Easy Lover. Older classics like Abba's
Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight) and Procol Harum's
Whiter Shade Of Pale also gets refurbished with debatable results.
Some will see it as sacrilege, but each generation has a sound they latch
onto - for now this is where it's at for many younger people. If there
is one positive thing to come from rehashing older songs is the hope that
those too young to know the originals won't think it's unique to the cover-artist
and do some research to find the authentic cuts and perhaps get turned
onto the originator's catalogue and discover a whole new world of cool
music. You're never dead-set in your musical taste and will always evolve
- as long as there are music fans in the world, we're alright - when the
novelty wears off, the good songs survive.
