GORILLAZ - Demon Days

Taking their cult status another step further, Albarn and his virtual
Gorillaz maintain their venture into a darker pop realm of horror, fantasy, zombies and great animation. This is very evident from the Pazuzu (Exorcist) imagery and original Dawn Of The Dead audio excerpts to Mr. Cult himself, Dennis Hopper, reading on the track Fire Coming Out Of The Monkey's Head. The album flows through subversive hip-hop and beats, to pop and rock, with everything from fictitious fantasies to socially disturbing pieces (like Kids With Guns) and a cinematic orchestral / gospel mood (the closing title track). From the more abrasive boozing burst of White Light you get the opposite of a far more mainstream pop sound surfacing through on tracks like Feel Good Inc., making this album more than just pop or hip-hop, but a rewarding listening experience that takes the listener on several trips. Simon Tong plays guitar and additional guests add their bits, like Sean Ryder (Happy Mondays), Neneh Cherry, De La Soul, MF Doom, Roots Manuva, Booty Brown, the London Community Gospel Choir, a string section and even an Ike Turner piano solo (on Every Planet We Visit Is Dead).
