KELLY CLARKSON - Breakaway

Still managed by Simon Fuller, this is the first American Idols winner's second album. Is it any different from her first? Rather. It opens with the scene-setter of a rock flavoured title track co-written by none other than
Avril Lavigne for that girlie-rock feel. The album follows a similar tone of loud guitars, live drums and more assertive vocalization, Kelly obviously trying to discard the straight pop image, the obvious album title a hint. But the chance of her going all out is slim, the ballads infiltrating. Kelly is neither Avril, nor Britney or Christina, but her own girl who seems to be a little more mature in her music with a lot more soul than many of the pop world's current favourites. The closing track is a live version of Matthew Wilder's Beautiful Disaster, showcasing her talent in and out of the studio. Kelly also had a hand in writing some of the songs, making her a little more than Fuller's puppet. I must say, I love how they now label the CD's current and "future classics" on the cover - predicting a pop artist's current song with the weighty label of "classic" is already presumptuous, not to mention one's that haven't even stood the test of time...
