MASTODON – Blood Mountain

This acclaimed extreme band is a beast of a different shade. Not exactly your straight forward traditional metal act, nor a total eruption of unbridled speed and power. There are even some hardcore flavours and a whole lot of progressive and melodic angles in the mix.
Lyrically they don’t follow normal sentence patterns in a traditional storytelling or song sense, but rather construct packets of concepts like independent statements, all adding to the whole of the song’s theme.
With mythical elements these guys seem to be bringing back that epic feel lost in heavy music which either still harps on personal torment of “me, myself and I”, social matters or the still popular “evil” path. Mastodon guides you through this realm without trailing off too far into a fantasy world.
This is a fascinating band casting their net much wider than your usual heavy rock act, and all the better for it. A refreshing guitar prominent musical force practicing under the guise of convention.
