QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE - Lullabies To Paralyze

While the album title sounds like it was borrowed from
Cradle Of Filth, the result is hardly as intense or extreme. Still precise and hard rocking, Lullabies seems a little less polished than the previous recordings with a slightly muffled lo-fi production styles - but that's the nature of fuzzy rock. Those trademark QOTSA straightforward, single chorded milling chops appear as the driving force behind many songs, as they've deployed so successfully in the past. The songs range from standard but highly effective rockers like Everybody Knows That You're Insane to a freaky march on Tangled Up In Plaid or the churning spiral descent of Burn The Witch's '70s rock groove. The uneasy dark edge still glimmers below the sometimes humourous surface that feels like borderline neuroticism. Again this album feels a touch on the safe side (on the surface), but the subversive nature lurks inside. Dave Grohl didn't help out on the drums this time, Joey Castillo getting behind the kit. The bonus song Like A Drug clocks the track listing in at fifteen tunes. Together with their last release (Songs For The Deaf) some may think they have a disability fetish…
