ROCKY: 30th Anniversary Edition – Soundtrack

When those horns pump in with the main theme we’re right there in the gritty ring with Rocky. This track is actually called Gonna Fly Now and is a unique blend of military orchestral fanfare, a soul flavoured jazzy tone, orchestral disco and rock, with the vocal chorus of DeEtta Little and Nelson Pigford further adding a human dimension. All of these elements flow throughout the rest of the soundtrack. For those of us who grew up with it, Gonna Fly Now provokes an instant emotional stirring and it appears in several incarnations throughout the soundtrack. Yes, sure it all smacks of the ‘70s – but that’s hardly a bad thing. Bill Conti’s soundtrack is a passionate and very expressive one, capturing all of the dimensions Sylvester Stallone had hoped for when writing his screenplay. Little and Pigford return on another track, You Take My Heart Away, the only other voice inclusion being the all vocal harmonics of Take You Back, by Valentine. Even Conti’s version of Yankee Doodle has that
Rocky feel to it. The balance between somber and triumphant is brilliantly captured in this unforgettable soundtrack which reflects the soul of Rocky. The sleeve also contains some classic black & white stills from the movie which has stood the test of time.
