STRAPPING YOUNG LAD – The New Black

On this, their latest sonic attack, this talented extreme music powerhouse takes us on another one of their unique journeys into a balance of melodic control and touching the outer reaches of intensity. The trademark epic SYL sound occasionally makes way for a more straight forward hard rock / metal approach.
Frontman Devon can pull the most extreme and melodic vocals that’ll make Tom Araya, Dani Filth, Bruce Dickinson and Corey Taylor collectively soil their trousers. New- or old school metal, he can do it all. Far Beyond Metal and Fucker is an ode to this undying extreme music form and the sad state of the artificial music industry. These two songs also include guest singers Oderus Urungus and Bif Naked. Break-up moments also become the focal point on the way less hardcore Almost Again (but beware the bursts of speed and power). The track Polyphony reflects a similar, less hectic approach. Things even get a little experimental on occasion with horns thrown in.
The line-up (unchanged since the second album, City), is joined here by Willie Campagna on keyboards and samples.

PS. The latest Gwar album was produced by Mr. Townsend!
