BATTALION
WARS
2 Eons ago the Iron Legion of the Xylvanian nation rose to dominate, but got thwarted by the Solar Empire with a powerful solar driven weapon. This weapon was hidden to prevent such a conflict of rearing its head again. But, a new Xylvanian leader has risen with a take-over in mind, but got defeated. Rumours however started to spread that the Solar Empire is developing a new weapon which gets the other countries nervous, leading to attacks. The other fictitious nations and forces in this balance of power (in addition to the Solar Empire, Xylvania and Iron Legion), include that of the Western Frontier, Tundran Territories, and Anglo Isles – each of them displaying familiar national, ethnic and cultural identities. This tactical warfare game takes the shape of mission objectives as opposed to the setting up of bases and taking over those of the enemy. As a commander of the Solar Empire, you need to guide your battalion through a range of action packed objectives, including defense, attack and securing areas. BWii does not allow for too much of a free roaming environment as your linear storyline leads to set outcomes dependent on your successful execution thereof. Besides getting actively involved in firefights and skirmishes, and taking command of hardware (from anti-aircraft vehicles, to planes and submarines), you get to deploy your recruits (incl. grunts, bazooka- and flamethrower troops) to take on specific targets. The look of the characters and hardware takes on a chunky cartoon-style, making the explosions, death and destruction less serious (yet I’m not too sure how much of a good thing that is – diluting this kind of aggression to a level of acceptance? The 12 age restriction may help with that…). 3 / C - Paul Blom |
