ACROSS THE UNIVERSE

With Jim Sturgess, Evan Rachel Wood, Joe Anderson, Dana Fuchs, Martin Luther, Joe Cocker, Eddie Izzard, Bono

Directed by Julie Taymor

Across The Universe is a fascinating musical, creating something totally new from something incredibly familiar. The story of a young artist traveling from the UK to the U.S. to find his real father in the late-‘60s is told entirely by means of Beatles songs. He leaves his girl behind and does not find the man he was hoping to find – but, he makes new friends and meets the new love of his life in a world so different to the one he left behind. But this free, idealistic realm also gets dark - The turbulent Vietnam War era is amazingly illustrated with some incredibly well visualized scenes, fusing brilliantly with The Beatles tunes, sang by the cast. It leans towards movies like Hair and repaints the time with fresh new strokes, throwing in some trippy and well choreographed sequences. Features musical cameos from Bono, Joe Coker and Eddie Izzard.
The making-of sheds a lot of light on how the entire production came together and how the makers approached it.
