BORDERTOWN

With Jennifer Lopez, Antonio Banderas, Martin Sheen, Sonja Braga, Kate del Castillo, John Norman

Written & Directed by Gregory Nava

Jennifer Lopez seemed to have been taking it easy of late (post marriage chill-out no doubt). This lower-key, issue-driven movie feels like it will be another TV-styled drama, but turns out to be a very interesting and eye-opening exposé. Based on true events in Juarez, Mexico, many young female factory workers fall victim to rape and murder, most going unsolved.
The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) along the Mexican border exploiting workers for a meager wage becomes the focal point as making money is more important than people’s lives.
Lopez plays Lauren Adrian, an American newspaper reporter who travels to Mexico to investigate these murders. She meets up with an old colleague who runs an independent newspaper constantly under fire from the government. He reveals that the problem is far more astronomical than the authorities are letting on. When a young girl survives a brutal attack, buried in the desert, going to the police proves more dangerous and they decide to approach the indie newspaper. Here Lauren protects her as she digs deeper into the case, placing her own life in danger.
