One
would
think
that
a tale
about
a couple
embroiled
in drug
addiction
is nothing
new
and
leaves
very
little
to be
explored.
But
this
Australian
take
on the
downward
spiral
based
on Luke
Davies’
novel
is a
vivid,
brutal
and
heartfelt
look
at two
young
people
lost
in love
and
their
heroin
addiction.
Their
dreams
and
ambitions
get
dissolved
through
the
needle
as their
love
starts
to crack
and
disintegrate
into
an uncontrollable
vortex,
blurred
with
crime
and
prostitution.
With
very
good
all-round
performances
in this
bitter-sweet
film,
Candy
is not
exactly
the
kind
of movie
to pick
up when
you’re
feeling
particularly
down.
As with
films
like
Christiane
F.
and
Trainspotting,
it is
hard
to understand
how
people
can
be attracted
to a
life
like
this
even
if the
harrowing
downside
is so
loudly
exhibited.
