South
African

writer

Wayne
Kramer
took
the
Short
Cuts
/ Crash
route
with
this
multi-character
intersecting
tale
focusing
on illegal
aliens
in the
States
(and
the
law
enforcement
and
bureaucratic
departments
dealing
with
it).
An immigration
agent
with
a conscience
tries
to track
a Mexican
woman
he glanced
over
at a
deportation
bust.
His
colleague
is an
Iranian
whose
father
is finally
being
naturalized.
A green
card
official
uses
his
influence
to his
own
gratification
by promising
an aspiring
Australian
actress
a permit
(if
she
plays
along).
A young
non-practicing
Jew
tries
to scam
his
way
into
having
the
powers-that-be
believe
he is
devoted
in his
faith
and
an asset
to the
school
where
he's
clinging
on to
a job.
A human
rights
lawyer
is both
dealing
with
the
adoption
of an
African
orphan,
while
struggling
with
the
deportation
of a
middle-Eastern
girl
(whose
school
essay
has
her
suspected
of terrorism
links).
All
of these
frays
criss-cross
and
join,
sometimes
naturally,
often
a bit
too
coincidentally
and
forced.
But,
as far
as dramas
of this
nature
goes,
Crossing
Over
is well
worth
watching.
