THE DIPLOMAT aka False Witness

With Dougray Scott, Rachael Blake, Claire Forlani, Richard Roxburgh, Jeremy Lindsay Taylor, Don Hany

Written by Ronan Glennane, Nell Greenwood, Greg Haddrick
Directed by Peter Andrikidis

It took about 4 viewings to finish this one - as I popped it in late at night and never survived more than 15 minutes at a time(!). Then, when I finally sat down one afternoon to finish it, I realized this was in fact a mini-series close on 3 hours and not a feature film! That'll teach me for not scoping out the running time.
A diplomat who'd lost his child (which also led to the disintegration of his marriage) finds himself in a pickle. He is bust for assisting the Russian mafia and after death threats he and his ex wife is moved to Australia under protection. But the plot thickens quite a bit when the British secret service gets involved and the the threats become all too deadly. The English detective investigating his case takes her job very seriously and travels to Australia to get to the bottom of what may involve a serious nuclear threat.
Dougray Scott didn't rise as meteorically as everyone had thought after his turn as Mission Impossible II's villain. Here he is pretty deadpan as usual.
Not a bad watch overall with some espionage staples, intrigue and action - but again, if seen as the mini-series it was intended for, this may be more palatable.
