ELIZABETH The Golden Age

With Cate Blanchett, Clive Owen, Geoffrey Rush, Samantha Morton, Rhys Ifans, Jordi Mollà, John Shrapnel, Aimee King

Written by William Nicholson & Michael Hirst
Directed by Shekhar Kapur

Kapur and Blanchett revisit the world of Queen Elizabeth, this time digging into a decidedly tense period of her reign via the well-fleshed-out screenplay of Nicholson and Hirst. Spain considers Elizabeth a heretic and is adamant to dethrone her (using her imprisoned cousin Mary Stuart as a pawn against her). With an armada heading for England across the ocean, she is faced with one of her biggest challenges. But there is another challenge on her plate – she falls for Walter Raleigh, considered a pirate to some and a hero to others.
With a sweeping scope this gloriously tumultuous period is brought to life, from the beautiful costumes to the dramatic ships nearing the English coast.

DVD Extras: Making-Of; Deleted Scenes; Inside Elizabeth’s World; Creating The Armada; Towers, Courts & Cathedrals Featurette; Director Commentary.
