FOOTSKATING 101

With Rob van Vuuren, Brendan Jack, Garth Breytenbach, Bevan Cullinan, C.C. Rudder, Lisa-Marie Schneider, Jose Domingos

Directed by Thomas Ferreira, Brendan Jack

The Straight Outta Benoni gang hit the screens again with this silly flick based on one of their MTV Crazy Monkey skits about guys who skate without boards. With a whole lot of slapstick and moronic behaviour, a young man is forced to follow in his dad’s footsteps by working the mines in Gauteng, South Africa. But, he wants to be a champion skater! Problem is, he can’t afford a skateboard, so he invents his own board-less skating style, footskating! With a team of idiot friends and his brother, they make up a team to go to the skating championship and take on their rivals. With South Africa film production being overshadowed by foreign crews coming here to shoot as opposed to local movies being produced, slowly but surely the film industry is getting its own identity beyond the political struggle subjects and slapstick Leon Schuster comedies which prevailed for decades. While this is no masterpiece, it is a move in the right direction.
The soundtrack features a nice batch of South African alternative bands like Diesel Whores, Fuzigish, Taxi Violence, Fokofpolisiekar, Kallitz and more.
Extra features: featurettes, premier screening event, and a whole lot of dicking around.
