No,
this
is not
a rehash
of the
1977
South
African
made
Jamie
Uys
hidden
camera
movie.
This
is Judd
Apatow's
entertainingly
heartfelt
tale
about
George
Simmons,
a highly
successful
comedian
whose
made
a fortune
with
his
thriving
career,
but
has
become
lonely,
miserable
and
nasty,
all
the
wealth
not
assisting
in making
him
happy.
To make
matters
worse,
he finds
out
he has
a terminal
illness.
His
path
crosses
with
an aspiring
stand-up
comedian
who
still
has
a lot
to learn.
He takes
a chance
on this
loser
and
asks
him
to write
some
skits
for
a charity
appearance.
Slowly
he starts
to confide
in him
and
hires
him
as his
gofer
and
skivvy
- from
having
to keep
him
company
until
he falls
asleep
to traveling
with
him
to visit
the
girl
that
got
away
(and
is now
married
with
children).
What
seems
like
a good
friendship
developing
is frequently
bashed
down
as just
a job,
Simmons'
nasty
side
snapping
through
regularly,
often
veiled
as a
joke.
Part
comedy,
part
human
drama,
this
blend
is handled
very
well
by all
involved.
It's
not
a total
frat-boy
side-splitter,
nor
a tissue-grabbing
tear-jerker.
It has
a sense
of realism
and
while
running
quite
long
for
a film
of this
kind,
manages
to keep
the
viewer
interested.
Several
cameos
from
a wide
range
of entertainers
including
comedians,
actors,
and
singers
all
make
convincing
turns
as themselves
- even
Tom
from
My Space
is there!
Extra
features
include
an extended
version
(by
about
8 minutes)
- this
function
should've
been
in the
main
menu
though,
not
the
extra
features,
as I
watched
the
movie,
then
on checking
out
the
extras
realized
the
extended
version
must
be activated
there!
While
it was
enjoyable,
I didn't
have
an extra
2 hours
to spare
to watch
the
entire
movie
again
to catch
the
few
added
minutes
(but
would've
liked
to do
so on
the
first
run!).
A blooper
reel
is also
added.
