THE MISSIONARY

With Michael Palin, Maggie Smith, Trevor Howard, Denholm Elliott, Michael Hordern, Graham Crowden, Phoebe Nicholls, Tricia George

Written by Michael Palin
Directed by Richard Loncraine

I remember this one from the '80s when Handmade Films released its most prolific batch of movies. During this period many Monty Pythons went off to fly solo. Terry Gilliam made movies like Brazil, and Terry Jones directed Erik The Viking, while John Cleese acted in movies from Clockwise to Privates On Parade. The Missionary was one of Michel Palin's solo roles. He plays a missionary spending many years in Africa, and returning to England where he is to be married. But life has a different course planned for him. Besides being drawn to another woman, he becomes the spiritual patron at a new home for women of ill repute. With this comes many a temptation, and he is but only a man!
With the expected British sense of humour and the exploration of stiff upper lip Brit culture (so prevalent in the Python skits), Palin is perfect in the role.
