MY SISTER'S KEEPER

With Cameron Diaz, Jason Patrick, Abigail Breslin, Alec Baldwin, Sofia Vassilieva, Evan Ellingson, Jeffrey Markle

Written by Nick Cassavetes & Jeremy Leven (based on the novel by Jodi Picoult)
Directed by Nick Cassavetes

A young girl is diagnosed with cancer at a very young age. In order to get an exact bone-marrow match and stem cells for Kate, her doctor suggests an unconventional process to her parent - that of having another child for this purpose. Many years and several hospital visits later, her younger sister Anna is set to donate a kidney. If Anna doesn't get a new kidney, she'll die. Their mother Sara has been a violent fighter to keep her daughter alive, losing sight of the younger kid who was conceived as spare parts. Their lives are thrown into turmoil as Anna goes to a lawyer to emancipate herself - not wanting to go through with these medical procedures anymore. With flashbacks focusing on each member of the family, including the somewhat marginalized brother, the story of their lives is told with bitter moments balanced by the sweet.
Where this could easily have been another terminal TV movie of the week, Cassavetes succeeds in crafting a heartfelt film of life, love and death, the strength and weaknesses of a family, its togetherness and undoing. Unto this purpose he is greatly assisted by a very accomplished cast.
Extras include additional scenes.
