With so many conflicts on our planet, musicians usually band together to make a stand in protest, empathy, or a call to action (from Band Aid & Live Aid, to USA for Africa and the Save Darfur John Lennon covers collection). A highly pertinent and worrisome problem (especially in Africa) besides kids being displace, killed or raped, is the forceful integration of innocent children into military forces. War Child Heroes was created to benefit children affected by war. The concept of this compilation has current artists doing cover versions of legendary groups. The originators of these songs got to choose who they'd like to redo their songs.
The new artists include Beck, The Kooks, The Hold Steady, Hot Chip, Lily Allen (with Mick Jones), Yeah yeah Yeahs, Franz Ferdinand, Duffy, Estelle, Rufus Wainwright, Scissor Sisters, Peaches, Adam Cohen, Elbow, The Like, and TV On The Radio, covering songs from Bob Dylan, The Kinks, Bruce Springsteen, Joy Division, The Clash, The Ramones, Blondie, Paul McCartney, Stevie Wonder, Brian Wilson, Roxy Music, Iggy Pop, Leonard Cohen, U2, Elvis Costello, and David Bowie.
While many of these new versions are quite listenable, some will have you running back to the brilliant originals!
