Even Hell Has Its Heroes
Since 1989, the slowest metal band on the planet has conjured some of music's most striking tectonic changes. AS WE WALK
(Belgium)
As We Walk
In March 2021, together with Brooklyn-based drummer Raf Vertessen and Belgian pianist Andreas Bral, Hanne De Backer walked the whole Belgian coastline in the company of a camel and a camera crew. The goal was to register this coastline by recording the musical impressions of the trio alongside the road. Everyday improvised sets were played and recorded on different locations in- and outdoors, starting at the French border and ending five days later at the border with the Netherlands.
The result is a 45-minutes music documentary; an ode to imagination and persistence, a plea for slowing down and truly encountering one another.

VISION GLITCH
(Belgium)
VISION GLITCH
Echo Beatty's Annelies Van Dinter and photographer Anton Coene likely crossed paths during one of their musical adventures years ago, perhaps even at a gas station. Through sharing vans and hotel rooms, they connected on both personal and professional levels, building a friendship that has withstood the highs and lows of their lives.
They're no strangers.
When confusion hit the world and eventually subsided, they found themselves feeling a certain void within themselves. They weren't disconnected from each other, but rather, they were disconnected from what they had come to know about themselves. The world's engine had started running again, but they weren't quite inside the vehicle. They weren't lost, per se, but they had somehow become misplaced and were wondering
about their essence once again.
It was then that Annelies started working on her third Echo Beatty album, and Anton, who had become a new dad, figured out how babies work and how to live a life next to that. They decided to embark on a journey to search for their essence with a van and not much of a plan. During one of the hottest weeks in recent years, they got into the car and started driving east. Because in the east is where the sun rises and east is what sounded best.
"Vision Glitch" is the result of that search. Packed with instruments and cameras, they simply started rolling and, for once, didn't wonder what the heck they were doing or why they were doing it.
Directed by Anton Coene

(USA)
From Executive Producer Tom Morello (Rage Against The Machine / Audioslave) - meet former gravedigger and doorman Ike Reilly. At 40 years old he landed a major label recording contract and in true rock & roll fashion he bought his family a dream home. He took his band out on the road where they became what The New York Times called “one of the best live bands in America.” Despite 9 albums, a cult following and immense critical acclaim Reilly has failed to achieve commercial success. Academy Award winning director James Marsh says, “Ike’s stuff sounds like it should be enormously successful and it just isn’t and I have no idea why.” Exploring Ike’s career, the film culls over 40 years of footage masterfully weaving in songs that reveal a complicated and formidable artist with an incredibly charismatic family. Struggling with booze and in the face of foreclosure, Ike finds redemption in music, art & family as his 3 sons begin performing with his band.

Shash Inside

SASH INSIDE
(Austria)
SHASH INSIDE's story spans from an artist's life with all its ups and downs, its beginning to the memory of it. Based on the music of the protagonists Abby Lee Tee and GC, episodes were developed and then the artists used them as inspiration for remixing the original tracks. This not only resulted in a documentation of the artists' work, but also new music and a soundtrack. This soundtrack also works without visualization like a 60-minute DJ mix. The film borrows from European cinema as well as from Hollywood cinema, packing the documentation into an entertaining genre mix of adventure film, drama and thriller. Director D. Strauch (also a DJ) forms this mix into a pure music film with sound design by SHASH, which proves how much the audience is guided by music and sound - only two sentences are spoken.

- THE ART OF TEACHING MUSIC -

Chameleons Unseen

CHAMELEONS

(Austria)
You have to empathize with every given situation and adapt to it: creative, communicative and flexible - like a chameleon.  The documentary focuses on the diverse work of instrumental and singing teachers in the field of tension between education and being an artist, between elementary music teaching and musical excellence. How and where do the instrumental and vocal teachers actually work? What are the challenges you face? In addition, the film illuminates the many possible approaches to making music, offers a look behind the scenes of musical excellence, with a contribution to diversity, inclusion and identity in instrumental and vocal pedagogy.  “Chameleons”: a film about the power of music, about the value of educational work, and at the same time a plea for freedom in artistic expression that encourages you to explore your own musicality.

- INTO AFRICA -

Le Mali 70 Timbila

LE MALI 70

(Germany / Mali)
Popular music has its roots in West Africa, and especially in Mali. In Berlin, a bigband discovers old vinyls from the Malian Bigband era, music which embodied the hope for Malian independence before a coup brought an end to the big band scene. Inspired by these songs, the Berliners travel to Mali to find the heroes of their vinyl-collection. There they research the origins of the songs, marvel at old archive footage and play jam-sessions with forgotten Malian stars, leading often to heated arguments over the correct beats, and record an album in Salif Keita's studio in Bamako

p l u s

TIMBILA
(Mozambique)
Nowadays there are young individual Timbila players who integrate the Timbila into popular music styles, creating a fusion between traditional and contemporary instruments. On the one hand, this arouses curiosity about the origin and history of the instrument, on the other, it raises the question of where the original practice of timbila went and whether traditional timbila groups still exist today. Deep in the district of Zavala there are still masters with their orchestras who pass the art of making, playing and dancing Timbila from generation to generation, who practice this art according to rules that must be strictly followed, to continue with their tradition. Today's orchestras are challenged by a lack of resources, they hardly earn any money, which makes young people move to cities in search of work, but still, some people have the strong will and the necessary courage to continue in the orchestras of Timbila and preserve this culture for the future.

The Dogmatics

THE DOGMATICS : A Dogumentary

(USA)
The Dogmatics might very well be the most emblematic Boston band of this half-century, that too-few people know about. This outlier status has more to do with the untimely death of their bandmate than with their catalog of kick-ass garage rock.  The Dogmatics were established in 1981. They gained notoriety with a loyal following in the Boston music scene, and beyond. The quartet was no different than any other talentless, self-deprecating, beer-swilling, girl-chasing lunkheads with guitars. It wasn’t about money. Catching a girl’s eye, a free round of drinks, or simply completing a song in unison were their rewards.  Fans and fellow bands in Massachusetts look fondly on the decades of positive ripple effects their presence (still to this day) has on the local music scene.  This documentary is a four year effort by family and friends, crafted as a tribute to the Dogmatics’ late co-founder and bassist Paul O’Halloran. See how the band came into being in the early 1980s, rising out of a pocket of musical talent in the South Shore area near Boston.  At its core, this is a story of brothers – by both blood and bond. Not only that, but a rock and roll quartet that included identical twins with a common passion for music and its rich history.

CLASSICS IN BRAZILIAN CHORO - The Movie

(Brazil)
The documentary film "Classics in Brazilian Choro - The Movie" portrays the creation of the musical project Concertando o Choro, whose undertaking consisted of composing, performing, and recording unprecedented musical arrangements that incorporated the style of the Brazilian popular genre choro into well-known works of classical music. The film captures essential steppingstones of this project from 2014 to 2017, from the initial idea to the composition of the arrangements to rehearsals to public concerts to recording sessions. In addition to getting a chance to experience the creative process of such choro legends as seven-string guitarist Luizinho Sete Cordas and other world-class musicians who took part in the project, the viewer also gets to witness the process through which musical elements of such typical Brazilian dances as maxixe, baião, and frevo (among others) “spice up” the aesthetic of famous works of classical music, including Bach’s “Air on the G String”, Ravel’s “Bolero”, and Bizet’s arias from the opera Carmen, to name a few.

OTHER WAYS OF LISTENING

OTHER WAYS OF LISTENING

(France)
“Changing life” was the objective proclaimed by the politicians who came to power in France in 1981. It was this impetus that enabled the Ministry of Culture to provide the major creators of avant-garde music with the means to develop new ways of making and listening to music. Luc Ferrari seized this opportunity to create a collective structure in 1982: La Muse en Circuit.  "Other Ways of Listening" retraces the tumultuous history of this association dedicated to the development of non-standard music, drawing on archives and explosive testimonies. The documentary takes the viewer behind the scenes of the experiments, recordings and shows promoted by this institution.  Forty years after its creation, this laboratory continues to irrigate a whole current of unclassifiable music, the common thread of which is still based on sound creation.   With the participation of Heiner Goebbels, Pablo Cueco, Henry Fourès, Brunhild Ferrari, François Sarhan, Wilfried Wendling, Georges Aperghis, Maria Bertel & Nina Garcia.

THE SAULEP VILLAGE CHAPEL - a folk orchestra with a swing
(Estonia)
Freely improvised sound-paintings now and then.  The concert took place in Tõstamaa mansion on the occasion of Arno Arrak's art exhibition in August 2022.  "There are no coincidences," said Uugway, the old turtle from the cartoon "Kung Fu Panda", the founder of Kung Fu. But if there are no coincidences, then what is it that we call a coincidence?  Playing is fun for children, it's great to remind them from time to time and let the imagination fly!  We make music while playing together, from the professionals to the students and the hobbyists to the beginners. We just take things that make a sound and have fun freely improvising with the sounds.

Whisper Of The Marimba

THE WHISPER OF THE MARIMBA

The marimba is the bridge between Africa and Latin America. The sound of the wooden xylophone connects the present-day life on the Ecuadorian Pacific coast with its African roots. Hundreds of years ago, the marimba music came to Ecuador across the sea. Stormy drum rhythms and the gentle, undulating melodies remind us of the violence experienced during slave trade and colonial rule and also tell the story of the centuries-old musical resistance of the Afro-Ecuadorian community. In 2015 the marimba music has been declared as an UNESCO World Cultural Heritage.
"The Whisper of the Marimba" portrays three generations of musicians who lay bare their worries and dreams as well as their unshakable trust in the power of art and music to nurture their identity and community. A story of losing memory and rewriting history...

The Silent Stage

THE SILENT STAGE

The music scene, which is always the first to shut down during earthquakes, mining disasters, terrorist attacks at home and abroad, came to a halt with the COVID-19 pandemic.
Though perceived as only “entertainment”, music is an indispensable element of art and one of the essential things that bring people together. The music industry, which can be gathered under headings such as musicians, production companies, managing companies and concert venues, employs about 1 million people from waiters to security personnel, helpers to sound operators, backstage managers to the technical team, cooks to cleaners, secretaries to assistants in companies.
The shutdown process that started before the pandemic has now entered an even more serious phase. During this time, many musicians have had to get by selling away their instruments while there have also been those who committed suicide. The musicians, who could not even pay their rent, had to leave the house they lived in, move to other cities, or return to their families abandoning their established way of life. The stories of the musicians, who could not receive short-time work allowance or unemployment pay, and other workers in the music industry are now featured in the documentary, The Silent Stage.
The 25’ documentary "The Silent Stage" narrates what people in the music industry in Turkey have gone through during the pandemic, and an be ref;ected in any part f the world where musicians struggle.

The aim is to stomp out the stigma surrounding mental illness and making mental health a household concept that is no longer frowned upon. In this documentary independent artists share their talents and voices in more than one way, facilitating healing by sharing different aspects of their lives, through storytelling, which we hope will be appreciated by the community and their beloved fans.
Filmmaker Tina Rix is a Nigerian American psychotherapist and a woman of the common everyday people and advocates for the marginalized, tormented, oppressed, and forgotten people. Calm Before... The Rising Storm The Reflectacles Are Dead

Calm Before... The Rising Storm
CALM BEFORE... THE RISING STORM

One for vinyl collectors and Garage Rock fans.

In June of 1967, a group of six high school seniors went into a tiny recording studio in Massachusetts and recorded an album called 'calm before...' that was to become a vinyl collector's classic in the decades to follow. The Rising Storm has survived to become one of the 'Unknown Legends of Rock n Roll' and five decades later, they are still making music.
The boys graduated, and went on with their lives and successful professional careers that had nothing to do with music. The 500 copies of the album, never meant for distribution, fell into obscurity, until 1982, when a German collector paid $2,000 for a rare copy.
Music reviewers and rock historians re-discovered "calm before..." calling the album an 'icon of the 60's garage band sound with surprising original material'. The album was 'bootlegged' in Europe and suddenly the band was unwittingly thrust back into the spotlight.
In this 30 minute documentary, filled with animations, re-creations, and interviews with experts, fans, and band members we piece together the story of the Rising Storm's unlikely rise to fame. We explain what caused the craze among vinyl collectors and hear what the band has to say about the music they created fifty years ago, the times they lived in, their subsequent “fame” and their real lives.

Directed by Andrew Brier

The Reflectacles Are Dead

THE REFLECTACLES ARE DEAD

The Reflectacles set out on their first and only national tour in 2011. They were a band on the rise, having played with music legends like Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, and Leon Russell. Six months after the tour, they broke up...
“The Reflectacles Are Dead” weaves together concert and archival footage with recent interviews of the band to look back on their sudden rise, comic fall, and the unexpected joy of life on the road with little money and endless possibilities.

In the early ‘90s a new musical genre (with its roots in the '80s) expanded in Norway: Black Metal

With dark, occult imagery, the renowned black and white corpsepaint and strong anti-Christian sentiments,
the abrasive and challenging music went beyond imagery into true darkness, not only resulting in church burnings,
but also violence, suicide and murder.

These events were captured in the book Lords Of Chaos.

Directed by Jonas Åkerlund (known for Rammstein and Madonna music videos and films like Spun and Polar),
he was also in fact a member of early Swedish Black Metal legends Bathory.

Sound Of Redemption Sound On Screen
SOUND OF REDEMPTION: The Frank Morgan Story
Friday 26 August, 6:15pm

BOOK HERE

The late jazz saxophonist Frank Morgan's tale of redemption from drug addict, conman and convict to beloved elder statesman of jazz.

Frank Morgan was a prodigal alto sax player who, like so many of his fellow musicians of the era, saw his career plagued by drugs and crime. What sets Frank apart is not just his exceptionally beautiful, classic alto playing, but also the amazing fact that he survived 30 years of revolving door incarceration and drug abuse and went on to a much heralded comeback career in the last 22 years of his life. His story is one of brilliant promise in his youth, a journey through the depths of hell, and redemption through his art.

The documentary film tells the story of his life and transformation through interviews with fellow musicians and people who were close to him. These are intercut with footage of Frank, and tracks of his very emotional music. Holding the story together is footage of the preparation and performance of a tribute concert in a prison. The years Frank spent in San Quentin were significant because there were so many great musicians “in residence” there that the far-sighted warden of the time allowed them to form a big band, known as The San Quentin All Stars. People came from all around the Bay Area to hear them play.

Directed by NC Heikin

As the tour travelled through the country the band went out and met various artists, architects, animators and musicians, finding out about the alternative creative culture and celebrating all they have to offer.

From Krasnoyarsk in Siberia to St. Petersburg on the Baltic Sea, Placebo: Alt.Russia takes you on the band’s journey through Russia, meeting great characters on the way, investigating the alternative culture in Russia, and taking in the raw emotions of Placebo’s powerful concerts.

George Orwell may have predicted that in 1984 the world would be a colorless place where humans relentlessly bowed down to big brother, but 1984 Riding Into Hell finds a very different world than he'd predicted. The year is examined by taking a closer look at the American rock & roll scene, world news & politics, celebrities & pop culture, and technology.
This rockumentray looks at that significant year in history via the rise and fall of Rock / Metal band FORCER.
Before Metallica became a household name, thousands of Hard Rock / Metal bands in as many towns across America dreamed of Rock stardom, but not everyone can make it. This documentary takes you through Forcer's trials and tribulations in the fight for fame and fortune (with archivefootage and new interviews). But what makes this even more enlightening is the inclusion of news- and history making events, from the Reagan election, Cold War, introduction of the Apple Macintosh and Paul McCartney being bust for marijuana possession, to Richard Branson launching Virgin Airlines, the Union Carbide chemical disaster in India, Atari video games and classic TV ads from the era.

JIVING AND DYING : THE RADIO RATS STORY
Saturday 27 August, 8:30pm

BOOK HERE

An enlightening look at a legendary South African rock band.

In late-1970s South Africa, there was a song on the radio about a spaceman called ZX Dan. It was by Radio Rats, a noisy little band from Springs, near Johannesburg. That song and hundreds more songwriter Jonathan Handley has penned since then remain an important part of South Africa’s musical landscape.
They influenced James Phillips (aka Bernoldus Niemand) who went on to initiate the alternative Afrikaans music scene of the mid-‘80s, the Voëlvry “movement”.

Jiving and Dying
is an attempt to afford the Rats the place they deserve in the history of independent rock ’n’ roll in South Africa.

This rare underground cult classic takes a look at the life and tragedy of Karen Carpenter (of The Carpenters). Using Barbie and Ken dolls to sympathetically recount the story of the pop star's death from anorexia, director Todd Haynes spent months making miniature dishes, chairs, costumes, Kleenex and Ex-Lax boxes, and Carpenters' records to create the film's intricate, doll-size mise-en-scene. The result was both audacious and accomplished as the dolls seemingly ceased to be dolls leaving the audience weeping for the tragic singer.

BLACKHEARTS takes a fresh look at the notorious Norwegian black metal music scene – but from a striking new angle. The documentary travels to South America, Europe and the Middle East to follow three black metal diehards who hail from extreme religious and political backgrounds.

Hector, Kaiadas and Sina are willing to risk alienation, imprisonment – even death – to play black metal and live by its ideology. They worship the Norwegian black metal music they have modelled their lives around.

BLACKHEARTS takes its audience deep into the minds, hearts and private lives of its characters. It explores how a music scene develops across religious, cultural and political lines – and provides comic relief on the things humans say, think and do when hijacked by passion.

Also features members from bands including Gogoroth, Immortal, Satyricon, Dark Throne, and music from Burzum, Keep Of Kalessin, Myrkskog, Gorgoroth, Manes.

SOAKED IN BLEACH
A full length documentary film about the death of Kurt Cobain

Friday 31 July
8:30pm

The Death Of An Icon Comes To Life

Soaked In Bleach reveals the events behind Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain's death as seen through the eyes of Tom Grant, the private investigator that was hired by Courtney Love in 1994 to track down her missing husband only days before his deceased body was found at their Seattle home.

Cobain's death shocked the world and music industry, and was ruled a suicide by the police (a reported self-inflicted gunshot wound), but doubts have circulated for twenty years as to the legitimacy of this ruling, especially due to the work of Mr. Grant, a former L.A. County Sheriff's detective, who did his own investigation and determined there was significant empirical and circumstantial evidence to conclude that foul play could very well have occurred.

The film develops as a narrative mystery with cinematic re-creations, interviews with key experts and witnesses and the examination of official artifacts from the 1994 case.

The screening will be preceded by live unplugged Nirvana performances, from local artists including A Murder (feat. members from A Murder, The Makabra Ensemble, Dawn Treader), Kevin Rule (With Dawn, V.O.L.) and JP Monroe (No. 15, Arc Reactor)

Director: Benjamin Statler
Written & Produced by: Benjamin Statler, Richard Middelton, Donnie Eichar

The 10 Year Odyssey To Overnight Success

A decade before their mid-80s "Stay Hungry" album (with hits like "We're Not Gonna Take It" and "I Wanna Rock") took the world by storm, legendary glam / shock rock / metal band Twisted Sister were rule breakers that no record company wanted to touch. While the biggest band in the Tri-State area, their image scared off record companies and break-out success kept eluding them even when selling out huge venues 5 nights a week. This eye-opening documentary tells this amazing story with full details from all the band members and those who were there across that tough and crazy decade of fighting for their music.

Some considered Twisted Sister a joke, others called them the greatest bar band in the world. While Punk and New Wave took over New York City, Twisted Sister was battling their way to the top of a working class, suburban, cover-band bar scene - surrounding New York, yet existing in a parallel world. At its peak were monster clubs, packing in audiences of up to 5000 a night - both a great living and a dead end, offering little future outside the suburban enclave.

That Twisted Sister would break out into multi-platinum stardom is well known, but this is no fable of fame and success, no litany of celebrity tributes and fanboy adulation. Rather a smart, savvy and wickedly funny story of a 10 year odyssey to overnight success.

[ Pre- and post audience discussions by the makers and participants ]

Art's Not Dead is a unique documentary-style music film that captures the "retirement" of a young Cape Town musician from his various bands and the music scene. In October 2010 drummer Artur Pereira announces that he is quitting music altogether, leaving his four bands in the process. As the bands prepare for a final farewell show, friends and band colleagues reflect on how he has impacted their lives and their music. The film offers a genuine insight into the relationships not only between band members, but between bands and their intertwined histories, and how one musician's actions reflect the greater sentiment of much of Cape Town's talented underground music community. The film also features live performances by Cape Town bands Coal, Andy Lund and the Mission Men, V.O.L., Three More White Guys and more...
